The Museum of Applied Arts (MAK) in Vienna is repositioning its textile and rug collection. This internationally renowned collection comprises objects from late antiquity to the present day, including significant Persian and Mamluk rugs from the 16th and 17th centuries. The design studio Forma Fantasma was commissioned to design the new exhibition. For the first time, the curatorial concept places the exhibits in a broader context with other textile highlights to illustrate cultural connections and international trade relations, such as those along the Silk Road. Special large-scale display cases and a drawer system take the fragility of the pieces into account and allow for a regular rotation of the exhibits for conservation reasons. The exhibition opens on 25 March 2026.
