Due to Corona, the German furniture trade had a hard time in 2020 due to lockdowns and access restrictions. On the other hand, retailers have also benefited from the fact that consumers have increasingly invested in their homes. Thus, the bottom line for last year was a plus of 1.2%, with total sales of just under EUR 35.4 billion, according to the EHI Furniture Report commissioned by the German trade association Mittelstandsverbund – ZGV.
With a market share of 73.6 % (2019: 74.8 %), bricks-and-mortar furniture retailers remain by far the most important sales channel in this segment. But the upward trend of online retailers – 11.5% compared to 10.1% in 2019 – has continued. DIY stores were also able to make small gains, with their market share increasing from 2.9 to 3.3 %. They were affected by closures in 2020, at least in part to a lesser extent than the specialist trade.
